East Division Semi-Final - Game 2

Rats steal Game 2

Albany evens series thanks to former Bear

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

joe@7641.com

After the Hershey Bears rallied to win Game 1 of the East Division Semi-finals 3-2 Wednesday night at Giant Center, the Albany River Rats turned the tables by coming from behind to take Game 2 by the same 3-2 score, thanks in part to former Bear Shane Willis' two goals - the last marker coming just 10 seconds into sudden death. Following Hershey's face-off win to start overtime, another former Bear, Jeff Finger, stole the puck and fed a pass to Willis, who cashed in on a shot from near the right circle. Willis gave the Rats a 1-0 lead at 1:15 of the 1st before Kyle Wilson answered for Hershey at 1:12 of the 2nd period. With former Bear Johnny Boychuk in the penalty box for Albany, Joey Tenute converted to propel Hershey to a 2-1 advantage heading into the 2nd intermission. As Jeff Schultz's hooking minor was coming to an end, though, Jakub Petruzalek evened the contest at 9:10 of the 3rd, setting the stage for extended play. Tyler Weiman (1-1), who stopped 35 shots in Game 1, turned aside another 32 in Game 2 to earn the victory. Frederic Cassivi (1-1) took the loss with 22 saves on 25 shots.

East Division Semi-Final - Game 1

Bears draw first blood

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

joe@7641.com

The Hershey Bears rallied to score two 3rd period power play goals and defeat the Albany River Rats 3-2 before 5,495 Wednesday night at Giant Center, taking a 1-0 advantage in their East Division Semi-final series. After a scoreless first period, Dave Steckel would show why he's one of the American Hockey League's top penalty killers, roofing a breakaway attempt on Albany goalie Tyler Weiman during a 5-on-3 man-down situation 41 ticks into the 2nd period. The River Rats would assume a 2-1 lead before the conclusion of the 2nd stanza, though, with former Bear Cody McCormick (at 7:02) and Ryan Bayda (at 15:00) pocketing even strength markers. Hershey capitalized on two of four power plays in the 3rd, however, as Tomas Fleischmann (at 4:59) and Kyle Wilson (at 12:36) found the back of the net to give the chocolate and white its eighth win in 9 tries this season against Albany. Frederic Cassivi (1-0-0) earned the win with 21 saves for Hershey while Weiman (0-1-0) suffered the loss with 35 stops.

Penguins pull April Fools joke on Bears

WBS scores 3 unanswered goals late to down Hershey 3-2

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

At the 15:34 mark of the 3rd period, the Hershey Bears, sporting a 2-0 lead on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, were well on their way to setting a new, single-season franchise record for points. At the 15:35 mark, however, the wheels fell off the wagon. After Robert Nilsson's wrister from in-between the circles brought the visitors to within one goal, Connor James collected a pair of markers just 13 seconds apart at 18:01 and 18:14 to seal the stunning come-from-behind win for Wilkes-Barre (47-20-2-4, 100 points). Following a scoreless 1st period, Stephen Werner (at 9:24 of the 2nd) and Chris Bourque (at 13:06 of the 3rd) found the back of the net for Hershey (46-15-6-6, 104 points), winners of seven straight heading into the first day of April. Jeff Deslauriers (19-11-3) earned the victory for Wilkes-Barre with 15 saves while inching the Penguins within 4 points of 1st place Hershey. Frederic Cassivi (19-8-5) suffered the loss for the Bears with 30 saves.
