Bears cruise past Lowell,
7-2

9 goals and 8 fighting majors
pretty much sum it up. 9 and 8 -- as in 98 -- also represent
the total points the Hershey Bears have accumulated this season,
as the Lowell Lock Monsters fell prey to a Bears club that equaled
a season high with 7 goals en route a 7-2 win before 8,114 in
a rare Friday night contest at Giant Center. With 3 points each,
Tomas Fleischmann, Boyd Gordon, and Lawrence Nycholat led the
scoring brigade for Hershey (42-19-4-10, 98 points), while Kirk
Daubenspeck (10-5-2) turned aside 21 shots to give the Bears
their Eastern Conference-leading 26th home victory of the season.
David Gove and former Bear Ryan Steeves would pocket markers
for the Lock Monsters (27-34-5-7, 66 points), with Craig Kowalski
(5-10-2) finishing with 33 saves as Lowell was officially eliminated
from the playoff race. The Bears, who reeled off six unanswered
scores in the game, now sit just two points behind Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
in the East Division standings. The Penguins, who were shutout
2-0 by the Binghamton Senators on Friday, still have three games
in-hand over Hershey, though.

several lefts in a fight inside the Lowell zone
Due to former
Bear Paul Healey being out of the lineup, another former Bear,

In a case of "whoops," Finger inadvertently skated to the Bears
penalty box after getting called for a holding penalty in the
1st period

Penalties doom Bears
Bridgeport hands Hershey 5-4
OT loss
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Midway through the 3rd period,
things were looking good for the Hershey Bears. Down by two
goals to start the final stanza, Hershey would find their way
back into the contest, with Kris Beech and Tomas Fleischmann
tallying special teams goals to even the score at 4-4. Even
with a 5-minute major to work with, though, the Bears would
not find the back of the net again in regulation, resulting
in their second overtime in as many games. There, the Bridgeport
Sound Tigers -- beneficiaries of a 5-on-3 man advantage for
1:55 -- would capture victory, with Justin Papineau lighting
the lamp to send the home team to their fourth straight win
over Hershey, 5-4 before 3,462 Wednesday night at the Arena
at Harbor Yard. Goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck (9-5-2), called
into action to replace starter Frederic Cassivi at the onset
of the 3rd period, turned aside 9 of 10 shots in 21+ minutes
to suffer the hard-luck loss for Hershey (41-19-4-10, 96 points).
Jeremy Colliton would pace the Sound Tigers (37-28-4-3, 81 points)
offense with 2 goals, while goalie Wade Dubielewicz (19-16-2)
earned the victory with 38 saves.

Graham is Golden for Bears
Mink nets OT winner over WBS
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Graham Mink made a memorable
return to the Hershey Bears lineup on Sunday, coming thru with
a clutch power-play goal with 7.8 seconds left in overtime to
down the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3-2 before 9,096 fans
Sunday night at Giant Center. The right winger, out of the lineup
with a sports hernia since February 3rd, picked up a Mike Green
rebound and fired a right circle shot over Penguins goalie Dany
Sabourin, giving the Bears their Eastern Conference-best 25th
home win of the season. With the victory, Hershey (41-19-3-10,
95 points) now stands just 5 points behind Wilkes-Barre (45-16-5-5,
100 points) in the East Division standings. Former Pen Kris
Beech (short-handed), as well as Tomas Fleischmann (power play),
would pocket 1st period scores to give Hershey a 2-0 lead, but
Daniel Carcillo and Krystofer Kolonos would answer in the 2nd
for the visitors, eventually forcing the 5-minute overtime frame.
In goal, Frederic Cassivi (32-17-6) would stop 20 of 22 shots
for Hershey, while his WBS counterpart Sabourin (26-12-4), at
times, looked stellar, finishing with 44 saves on the night.

Win over Senators seals trip

The Hershey Bears became
the fourth AHL team to punch their ticket to the playoffs this
season, defeating the Binghamton Senators 5-4 in a seesaw contest
that lasted until the final attempt in the shootout. After Steve
Martins answered Kris Beech's earlier score in the shootout,
Boyd Gordon would solidify the victory in the latter half of
the 5th round, sending a shot past Senators goalie Billy Thompson
to give the Chocolate and White just their fourth win in 14
shootouts this season. During regulation, Mark Wotton, Tomas
Fleischmann, Beech, and Lawrence Nycholat would tally markers
for Hershey (40-18-3-10, 93 points), who improved to 5-0-0-1
versus Binghamton this season. Goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck (9-4-2),
seeing his first AHL action since Feb. 11, stopped 35 shots
during regulation and overtime, before turning aside 4 of 5
attempts in the shootout. Goals by former Bear Charlie Stephens,
Denis Hamel, Jeff Heerema, and Grant Potulny would pace the
BSens offense, while Thompson (8-16-3) ended with 34 saves in
65 minutes as Binghamton (29-31-4-4, 67 points) saw its modest
3-game win streak come to an end.

Bears continue streak with
2-1 win over Albany
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
March 28, 2004. To you and
me, that may stand as an insignificant date in time. For the
Albany River Rats, though, it serves as a constant reminder,
as it was the last time they defeated the Hershey Bears (4-2
in Albany, for those keeping score). Since then, it's been all
Hershey, all the time. Saturday night at Giant Center, the Bears
(39-18-3-10, 91 points) ran their winning streak to 13 straight
over the last place Rats (23-37-4-2, 52 points), marking the
second consecutive campaign Hershey has swept the season series.
Colin Forbes (power play) and Eric Fehr (game-winner) would
light the lamp for the victors, while goaltender Frederic Cassivi
(31-16-6) turned aside 32 shots, only allowing a Chris Minard
marker in the final minute of the 3rd period. Ari Ahonen (2-9-0)
suffered the loss for Albany, ending with 36 saves.

Bears blow two-goal lead,
fall in shootout to Binghamton, 3-2
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Stop me if you've heard
this one before. The Hershey Bears jump out to a multiple goal
lead, allow their opponent to tie the score, then silently bow
out in the shootout round. Yup, no luck of the Irish could be
found on the Hershey bench Friday night as the Bears, who led
2-0 midway through the 3rd period, served up Senators goals
four minutes apart before getting outscored by the Sens 2-1
in the shootout, resulting in a 3-2 loss before 3,797 at the
Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in New York's southern
tier. Joey Tenute and Kris Beech would pot power play markers
for Hershey (38-18-3-10, 89 points), while goaltender Frederic
Cassivi (30-16-6) turned aside 34 of 36 shots in regulation
and overtime, and another 2 of 4 in the shootout. Danny Bois,
who had a penalty shot attempt stopped by Cassivi just 1:06
into the 1st period, netted the equalizer at 15:39 of the 3rd
before Charlie Stephens and Jeff Heerema collected shootout
goals as Binghamton (28-31-4-3, 63 points) improved to 2-4 versus
Hershey this season. Kelly Guard (19-15-1) would earn the win
in net for Binghamton, stopping 22 shots in 65 minutes before
rejecting another 4 of 5 attempts in the shootout. Hershey's
loss, coupled with Philadelphia's overtime victory over Wilkes-Barre,
prevented the Bears from punching their card to the postseason.

were white-washed by the Providence Bruins 4-0 Sunday afternoon
at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Ben Walter, Jonathan Sigalet, Eric
Healey, and Jason MacDonald would supply the goal scoring for

the season. Providence, who won both games of the season series
within the last week, extended its winning streak to four games.
Goaltender Maxime Daigneault (0-1-2), making his 3rd start of
the AHL campaign, finished with 18 saves on 22 shots as Hershey
(38-18-3-9, 88 points) was blanked for the fifth time in 05/06.

Bears right ship in 4-1 win
over Pirates
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Looking to rebound after
a disappointing 3-2 overtime loss on Friday, the Hershey Bears
responded in fine fashion, easily besting the Portland Pirates
4-1 before 6,752 Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic
Center in Southern Maine. Joey Tenute, Boyd Kane, Colin Forbes,
and Dave Steckel would net even-strength goals for Hershey (38-17-3-9,
88 points), while Frederic Cassivi (30-16-5) turned aside 27
of 28 shots to become the first Bears goalie since J.F. Labbe
in 1996/97 to record 30 victories in a season. Unfortunately,
the Bears were unable to gain any ground on the East Division-leading
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who shutout the Manchester Monarchs
2-0 on Saturday. Dustin Penner would tally the only marker for
Portland (40-16-5-3, 88 points), with netminder Jani Hurme (4-6-0)
ending with 20 saves as the Pirates saw their modest three-game
winning streak come to an end.
